The President of the Republic met the President-elect Arnold Rüütel

President Meri spoke to Arnold Rüütel of the foreign policy activities during his remaining term in office, including his meeting with the German President Johannes Rau and the meeting of the Presidents of NATO candidate countries in Sofia.

President Meri and Arnold Rüütel discussed the key foreign policy issues facing Estonia. Arnold Rüütel saw accession to the European Union and NATO as Estonia’s foreign policy priorities and the main trends of our foreign and security policy.

Also domestic policy issues were addressed at the meeting, and questions of the constitutional development of the Republic of Estonia were discussed.

The President of the Republic has instructed the Office of the President of the Republic to inform Arnold Rüütel of all the issues related to the President’s institution before he assumes office.
