The President of the Republic congratulated Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty

President Lennart Meri today sent his congratulations to the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who is celebrating its 50th anniversary. As the President said, the radio station has played a major role in the life of the Estonian people and in his life as well.

In his letter of congratulations, the President wrote that those who had not lived under communism could not understand the significance of the RFE/RL, but that this station, as well as the other ''voices'', has a role to fulfil in the postcommunist countries also today. The President recalled that ten years ago, he had nominated this influential radio station as a candidate of Nobel Prize of Peace.
