President of the Republic met the Presidents of Georgia and Bulgaria

President Lennart Meri met the Georgian President Eduard ShevardnadzePresident Lennart Meri met the Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze this morning in Yalta. The Presidents discussed the bilateral relations between Estonia and Georgia, as well as both countries’ relations to the European Union and NATO. The Presidents admitted that the relations between Estonia and Georgia are developing well. President Meri spoke of Estonia’s success in accession to the EU and NATO. Eduard Shevardnadze said that accession to these organisations is also Georgia’s goal. The Georgian President also thanked Estonia for supporting Georgia’s European Council membership.

President Meri said that the relations between Estonia and Georgia should be further activated and expressed his hope that the Foreign Ministries of the two countries would work to achieve this.

On the afternoon meeting with the Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov, the need for further bilateral agreements between the two countries was discussed. The Presidents of Estonia and Bulgaria considered it necessary to exchange more information on the accession to the EU and NATO.
