16.09.1999

President Lennart Meri made a presentation on the seminar ''From Yalta to Yalta, what have we learned?'' yesterday on September 15, in the University of Iceland.

President Meri reiterated the role of ethics in international politics, and said that this is what small nations can and must contribute.

Speaking of stability, Lennart Meri said that if there is no stability even in one part of the world, there could be no peace of mind in any country of the world.

As the Estonian Head of State said, Iceland's role in 1991 was more than that of an icebreaker – Iceland reminded everybody of the forgotten values.

Answering the questions of the university professors and students, the Estonian President expressed his sincere satisfaction with the UN Security Council's unanimous decision concerning East Timor.

Yesterday evening, the Estonian delegation visited Thingvellir, where Iceland's historic parliament once convened. The Prime Minister of Iceland David Oddsson and his spouse Astridur Thorarensen hosted a dinner in honour of President Lennart Meri and Mrs Helle Meri at Thingvellir.
