President of the Republic Received the Ambassador of Canada

Peter McKellar, the Ambassador of Canada, on the ceremony of presenting his credentials to the President of the RepublicPresident Lennart Meri received Peter McKellar, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada, who came to present his credentials, this morning in Kadriorg.

Presenting his credentials, the Ambassador said that the good relations between Estonia and Canada date back to the days of the League of Nations. The Estonian war refugees who settled in Canada have made a substantial contribution to Canada's development. The Ambassador hoped that the relations would become even closer and said that he would do everything in his power to attain this goal.

President Meri thanked the Ambassador for Canada's support to Estonia's accession to NATO. As President Meri said, it would be good if the Canadian Mission in Tallinn would develop into an Embassy. On the meeting, also the opportunities for organising the studies of Estonian and English for Estonians were discussed.
