President of the Republic Conferred the Cross of St. Mary’s Land to the Ambassador of Germany
27.07.1999

President Lennart Meri received Bernd Mützelburg, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Estonia, who came to pay his farewell visit, in Kadriorg today. With his Resolution from July 19 this year, the President of the Republic conferred the I Class Order of the Cross of St. Mary’s Land to Ambassador Bernd Mützelburg for his services to the Republic of Estonia. The President recognised the German Ambassador’s good work in developing the relations between the two countries, which has also resulted in the first visit to Estonia of the Federal Chancellor of Germany, planned to take place in autumn 1999.

The Ambassador reiterated that the political decision for Estonia’s accession to the European Union has been made, which according to the Ambassador still means a lot of technical homework for Estonia. The Ambassador also expressed his hope that the political decision for Estonia’s accession to NATO would also be firm.

The Ambassador emphasised that the forthcoming visit to Estonia of Gerhard Schröder, the Federal Chancellor of Germany, in November 1999, would provide a rewarding opportunity for promoting the relations between Estonia and Germany and also for expressing and establishing political positions.
