President of the Republic had a Meeting with the President of the European Commission
05.03.1999

President Lennart Meri had a meeting with Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission, yesterday on March 4 in Brussels.

On the meeting, the internal developments and the enlargement process of the EU were discussed. President Santer emphasised that the internal reforms of the EU would not hinder the enlargement of the European Union, and assumed that the EU would agree on the new budget, or Agenda 2000, already prior to the European Parliament elections in summer 1999.

President Meri stressed the need for the further development of the European structures so that the European Union would have an efficient foreign policy.
