The President of the Republic met the Catholic Bishops of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and FinlandPresident Lennart Meri received the Catholic Bishops of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland, who had convened in Tallinn for an annual meeting, in Kadriorg today.

On the meeting, the role of the Catholic Church in the globalising world was discussed: throughout history, it has been the role of the Catholic Church to highlight human rights and the protection of human rights on global plane. Ever since the times of Bishop Fulco, the Catholic Church has been the bearer of ethical values in the Nordic region and in Estonia, President Meri said. On the meeting, President Meri also expressed his esteem for the activities of Pope John Paul II; as the President has followed the Pope's tour of the Mediterranean region and his speeches in Greece, Syria, and Malta with great interest.
