17.10.1998

Yesterday evening, The President of the Republic who is on official visit in Turkey, gave an introductory address on the seminar in Istanbul organized by the Turkish Council of Economic Development and Co-operation (DEIK). In his address, President Meri emphasised the prospects of trade exchange and economic co-operation between Estonia and Turkey. The legal basis for the co-operation already exists in the form of agreements that have been concluded or are currently prepared for conclusion. As Lennart Meri said, the northern supporting point of the bridge crossing the Strait of Bosporus could in our imagination be transferred into the Gulf of Finland – this symbol would emphasize the co-operation between Turkey and Estonia.

Jaak Leiman, the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Estonia, gave a longer survey of the situation on the seminar. Aslar Onel, Chairman of the Turkish-Estonian Economic Council, and Gigdem Turzün, Director of the DEIK, spoke on the seminar of the Turkish view of the prospects of the economic relations between Estonia and Turkey.
