President of the Republic Met with County Governors

President Lennart Meri met with Estonian county governors in Kadriorg today and he introduced them the plan to meet with people who were unlawfully arrested and deported during the soviet and nazi occupation and their family members in all Estonian counties before the 60th anniversary of the Big Deportation of July 14, 1941.

Anniversary events Estonia Remembers, in which the President of the Republic will also participate, will be held in county centres from the end of May until June 14 in co-operation with county governments and different organisations of freedom fighters and the deported. Everyone who has been unlawfully arrested or deported during the soviet and nazi occupations and their families and friends are invited to the events.

President Meri said that storing history and remembering history is very important. Three weeks ago, President Meri opened the competition in collecting memories about deportation, where all schoolchildren are invited write down the memories of their families, relatives or neighbours and acquaintances about deportation.
