President of the Republic Received Ambassadors of Venezuela and Qatar

Today at noon in Kadriorg Palace, President Lennart Meri received José Eugenio López Contreras, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Venezuelan Bolivar Republic, who came to hand over his credentials. When accepting the credentials, President Meri recalled the contacts between Estonia and Venezuela from the pre-war period, when Venezuela supported Estonia's becoming a member of the League of Nations, and the decision of Venezuela not to acknowledge the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union. It was admitted at the meeting that it is necessary to increase the frequency of contacts between the two countries, the ambassador praised the role of Estonians in their current homeland, especially the work of the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Estonia Arne Roostna in developing the relationships between the two states.

Today, President Lennart Meri also received Mohamed Hassan Al-Jaber, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Qatar, who handed over his credentials. The Ambassador of Qatar repeated to the President of the Republic the invitation to visit Qatar, which the President accepted with gratitude. The situation in the Persian Gulf region and in Central Asian states was discussed at the meeting. President Meri expressed his hope that Qatar is able to support the small Islam community in Estonia, who wishes to build itself a sanctuary.
