The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of Nigeria

Ambassador of Nigeria Alfred Johnson Nanna and Lennart MeriPresident Lennart Meri received Alfred Johnson Nanna, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who came to present his credentials, in Kadriorg today. Ambassador Alfred Johnson Nanna resides in Kiev.

Presenting his credentials, the Ambassador recognised Estonia's success and confirmed that economic relations between the two countries should be promoted. As the Ambassador said, the successful privatisation process in Estonia sets an example to Nigeria.

On the meeting, the development of telecommunications and oil industry in Nigeria was discussed, as well as possible co-operation between mineral industry in Nigeria and the industry of north-eastern Estonia. The possibility to increase Nigeria's cocoa export to Estonia was discussed. Also problems of the environment were addressed.

President Meri also spoke of the missionaries of Estonian origin who had been active in Africa at the end of the 19th century, and of the books on grammar they had composed. The President considered it necessary to promote co-operation in the field of culture and science, and advised the Ambassador to visit Tartu University.
