The President of the Republic congratulated George W. Bush on his election as President of the USA

President Lennart Meri today sent a letter to George W. Bush, Governor of the State of Texas, and congratulated him on his election as President of the United States of America.

President Meri expressed his conviction that the strategic partnership that has developed between Estonia and the United States of America over the past decade will continue to be further strengthened during George Bush's presidency.

The President said in his letter that he appreciated the US President-elect's commitment both to the full integration of the new European democracies into the economic, political and security institutions of the transatlantic community, and to the continued enlargement of NATO. President Meri stated that NATO has been and will continue to be the central pillar of the transatlantic relationship, and confirmed Estonia's commitment to this partnership which has ensured peace and stability in Europe for the past fifty years.

President Meri also recalled Estonia's good relations with former President George Bush and Secretary of State James Baker, and invited the President-elect to visit Estonia.
