Yesterday, President Lennart Meri sent a letter of congratulations to Vojislav Kostunica, who had been elected the President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and wished him strength and perseverance in his work.

President Meri wrote that he watched with great sympathy the events in Yugoslavia, which reminded him of the Estonians' own struggle for democracy and freedom ten years ago. ''Since then, Estonia has progressed far along the road towards full integration in all European and Euro-Atlantic structures, and I hope that under your leadership your country will move in the same direction,'' President Meri wrote, also promising Estonia's support in this task.
