President of the Republic supports the organisation of European championship of Dragon Class sailing yachts in Tallinn
27.10.2000

President Lennart Meri sent a letter to Constantinos II, King of Greece in exile, who is the President of the International Society of Dragon Class sailors, and expressed his support to the proposal of the City of Tallinn to host the yachting championship of the Dragon class yachts in Tallinnin 2004. On Saturday, October 21, the International Society of Dragon Class Yachting had its annual meeting in London and decided to hold the competition in Tallinn.

The President wrote that organising the European championship in Tallinn is a reasonable decision, as Estonia and the Estonians have ancient seafaring traditions, and that the European championship in yachting would not only bring recognition to Estonia, but will also enable to introduce this seaside country and people to the world.

The application for arranging the European championship was submitted to the international society by Yevgeni Kazakov, President of the Estonian Society of Dragon Sailors, and Alar Volmer, representative of a company that arranges yachting events. The application was also supported by the Mayor of Tallinn Jüri Mõis.
