11.08.2000

President of the Republic opening the exhibition ''Estonian painting at the turn of the millennium'President of the Republic opened the exhibition ''Estonian painting at the turn of the millennium'', at the Tallinn Art House today. It was President Lennart Meri's idea to organise the exhibition, and the exhibition was designed and the paintings chosen by Olev Subbi. Tallinn Art House took care of the technical side. The exhibition was financed by the President's Cultural Foundation.

Forty-one recent works by Estonian artists can be seen on the exhibition. When opening the exhibition, President Meri said that the Estonian art of painting in the second half of the 20th century was indeed the art of remaining true to oneself. ''It was my wish to be convinced of this once again, and to convince you, and above all – to thank you all for this once more,'' the President said.

The exhibition summing up the Estonian art of painting at the turn of the century should arouse interest also outside Estonia: ''This exhibition might arouse your curiosity to find out how Estonia has succeeded in remaining Estonia,'' President Meri says in the foreword of the exhibition catalogue that was published for the opening day of the exhibition and contains photographic reproductions of all the works exposed on the exhibition.
