President of the Republic met the Director of Siemens AG at Kuressaare
03.07.2000

President of the Republic had a meeting with Heinrich von Pierer, Director General of Siemens AG, this evening and offered him dinner. On his visit, Heinrich von Pierer will investigate Estonia's economic environment and Germany's investment possibilities here as a continuation to Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's recent visit.

As von Pierer said, Siemens actively wishes to extend its activities to Estonia and the other Baltic states, being convinced that this is part of Europe. Also the power circle of the Baltic Sea countries, a subject very important for Estonia, was discussed as the Siemens know-how could assist in building up the circle. Other specific projects, such as telemedical bridge between Estonia and Germany, which could be ready by autumn when President Meri's state visit to Germany is going to take place, were discussed as well.

President Lennart Meri and Mr. von Pierer made a tour of Kuressaare and had a look at the historic bishop's castle, where electricity had been installed already at the beginning of the 19th century, with the help also from the Siemens family.

Also the German Ambassador to Estonia Gerhard Enver Schrömbgens and the Saaremaa County Governor Jüri Saar participated at dinner. Besides Kuressaare, the Siemens delegation will also visit Tallinn.
