President of the Republic visited the Viru County

President Lennart Meri today participated in the memorial events dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the art historian and antiquity preserver Villem Raam at the Viru County.

The Estonian Society for Antiquity Preservation, the Estonian National Culture Fund, the Estonian National Library and the Rakvere Museum had initiated the Viru County Day that begun with a conference at the Rakvere Museum. After that the art historians, the artists and the antiquity preservers, as well as the friends and supporters of Villem Raam, visited the churches of the Viru County that Villem Raam had studied; he had also been in charge of the renovation works of these churches.

The art historian Kaur Alttoa spoke of the renovations done in the churches of Kadrina, Haljala and Viru-Nigula, and the architectural archaeologist Juhan Kilumets showed the Chapel of St. Mary's at Viru-Nigula. To conclude the memorial day of Villem Raam, also the Kalame farm at Karepa, where the artist Richard Sagrits had once lived and where the Rakvere Museum will be in charge in the future was visited.
