President of the Republic met the Mayor of Tallinn
05.06.2000

President Lennart Meri visited the municipal government of Tallinn today, and had a meeting with the Mayor Jüri Mõis and other city leaders today; also the Harju County Governor Orm Valtson participated in the meeting.

The members of municipal government spoke to the President of the development plan of Tallinn, and mostly of the need and possibility to prove to the inhabitants and visitors of Tallinn that Tallinn is a seaside city and has a lot of access to the sea. The President recalled that on his visit to the Sea Fair a couple of weeks ago, he had been told that the scarcity of ports and berthing places in Tallinn constituted a major problem.

After the discussion a tour of the city took place, the Admiralty Basin and its surroundings, which are currently being cleared of ruins, were looked at. The President and the Mayor also visited the seaside by the City Hall, where construction preparations are under way on the site of the former Soviet Army concrete plant site. By the streets along the seaside, the President and the Mayor drove to the site of great value to the history of architecture, namely the hydroplane hangars built in 1916 at Küti Street, where the construction activities not authorised by the municipal government and the extremely deplorable state of the hangars became apparent.

The President also visited the base of the Estonian navy in the Mine Harbour and the Border Guard port at the Süsta street.
