President of the Republic received the Ambassadors of Indonesia and Greece
08.06.2000

Today at noon, President Lennart Meri received in the presidential palace of Kadriorg Basil Patsikakis, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Greece to the Republic of Estonia, who came to present his credentials. On the meeting, Estonia's accession to the European Union and NATO were discussed, and the Greek Ambassador, who had assumed his post recently, recognised Estonia's work done to attain these goals.

President Meri expressed his pleasure with the recent joint military manoeuvres of Greece and Turkey, seeing them as a sign of developing good co-operation. Also the Estonians living in the Crimea were discussed, and as President Meri said, he is delighted with the decision of the Greek Government to buy the collection of the famous art collector Georgius Kostakis into state ownership and develop it into a museum.

The President also received today Ahmad Fauzie Gan, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia, who presented his credentials. The Ambassador of Indonesia said that for Indonesia, the hardest times are past, the society is stabilising and the democracy of domestic policy is developing fast. The Ambassador expressed his great recognition to Estonia's success and hoped that when Estonia becomes a member of the EU, Indonesia would be able to promote trade relations with European countries through Estonia. As the Ambassador said, the two countries have started economic and trade co-operation successfully despite the great distance between them, and this work must be carried on.
