President of the Republic met the Prime Minister of Denmark
03.03.2000

President Lennart Meri had a meeting with Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, in Kadriorg today. On the meeting, the bilateral relations of Estonia and Denmark, as well as Estonia's accession to the European Union and NATO were discussed.

Speaking of the reforms and developments in Estonia and in the EU, also the growth of extremism in European countries was touched upon. President Meri mentioned that when reading the materials of the Nuremberg trial of late, he had noticed that several of the Nazi Germany leaders had also belonged to the Communist Party once. Commenting on the events in Europe, the Danish Prime Minister said that it may have been a mistake that while much attention has been given to economy in the last decades, the democratic values have not so often been metioned. As Rasmussen said, the members of the European Union must meet the same requirements that are presented to those wishing to accede.

Also the need to reorganise the OSCE Mission was discussed on the meeting, and at the Danish Prime Minister's request, President Meri gave his opinion on the developments in Russia. Also the linking of the energy networks surrounding the Baltic Sea was discussed.
