President of the Republic met the Foreign Secretary of Great Britain 07.03.2000President Lennart Meri met Robin Cook, Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland today. On the meeting in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at Whitehall, the situation in Russia, in Caucasia and elsewhere in the world was discussed, as well as the bilateral relations. Robin Cook spoke to President Meri of the experience of his recent visit to Russia. Speaking of the situation in Caucasia, the Estonian Head of State and the British Foreign Secretary discussed the possibilities to support the Caucasian countries.
It was stated that bilateral relations between Estonia and the United Kingdom are excellent, and that the UK is interested in Estonia's fast accession to the European Union. As the Foreign Secretary said, the Great Britain intends to increase the support to training programmes, thus increasing the opportunities of young Estonians to study in Great Britain. According to Cook, he has very good memories of his visit to Estonia last summer.
Today, President Lennart Meri also had a look at the archive of the British diplomats who had worked in the Baltic States in 1940.
