President of the Republic Received the Ambassador of Mexico

The Ambassador of Mexico Maria Cristina de la Garza Sanoval on the ceremony of presenting her credentials to the President of the RepublicPresident Lennart Meri received Maria Cristina de la Garza Sanoval, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of Mexico to Estonia, who came to present her credentials, in Kadriorg today.

According to the Ambassador, the relations between the two countries are excellent, Estonia and Mexico are both committed to the principles of the Rule of Law and co-operate closely within the international organisations. The Ambassador mentioned the need to conclude agreements on investment protection, cultural and educational co-operation, and agricultural and animal health issues. The Ambassador also mentioned that new areas of co-operation, such as science and technology, could be explored in the future.

Estonia and Mexico concluded diplomatic relations already in 1937, and the restored communication between the two countries has been very close. As the Ambassador said, the Estonian President's state visit to the United States of Mexico in 1995 played an important role in establishing closer relations.

On the meeting, also the situation in Chechnya and Dagestan was discussed. The Ambassador reiterated that Mexico is following the developments there with great concern. Also, the Ambassador spoke of the situation on Cuba.

President Meri said that at the time when some states consider critical situations and problems to be their domestic affairs, the common domestic affairs of the whole world also need to be defined.
