President of the Republic had a Meeting with the German Minister of Foreign Affairs 03.09.1999President Lennart Meri received Joschka Fischer, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, in Kadriorg this afternoon.
On the meeting of the Estonian President and the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, the relations between the two countries were the main subject of discussion. President Meri appreciated the history of the relations between Estonia and Germany and hoped that the relations would regain former extent.
The German Foreign Affairs Minister Joschka Fischer recognized Estonias aspirations to accede to NATO and promised Germanys further support to the enlargement of this organization. The Minister also appreciated success on the EU accession negotiations.
President Meri raised the question of whether and how could Germany support the improvement of the quality of legal education in Tartu University, and the German Minister promised to look into the matter.
