President Lennart Meri attended the reception hosted by the Chinese Ambassador Zou Mingrong on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. In his conversation with the Ambassador, Lennart Meri thanked China for supporting Estonia's aspirations to accede to NATO. The Chinese Ambassador confirmed that China respects Estonia's wish and added that China feels strong empathy with the small nations' wish to enhance their security.

It was admitted that the relations between Estonia and China are excellent, even during the eight months of this year trade between the two countries has increased 40%. The President of the Republic emphasised that the negative experience of foreign occupation has contributed to the development of good relations between Estonia and China.

The Chinese Ambassador invited President Meri to visit China once again.
