President Meri sent his congratulations to the British Minister of Defence George Robertson who today was elected to the post of NATO Secretary General. In his letter the President wished Robertson strength in fulfilling his important duties and emphasized at the same time Estonia's willingness to contribute its share to safeguarding of Estonian security.

The President stressed Robertson's essential role in the development of the Baltic Defence College and expressed his hope that Estonia would be come a member of the Alliance during George Robertson's term of office.
