President Lennart Meri received a letter from Johannes Rau, new President of the Federal Republic of Germany, who thanked the head of state of Estonia for the congratulations that the latter sent to him upon the beginning of his term in the office.

President of Germany Johannes Rau expressed hope in his letter that the two countries will have closer relations in the future. President Rau also wrote that he hoped that Estonia will become a full member of the European Union during his term in the office.
