President Met with the Representatives of Farmers
10.08.1999

Today afternoon in his Paslepa home, President Lennart Meri received the representative of the Chamber of Agriculture and Industry Urmas Laht and the Director General of the Central Association of Estonian Farmers Kaul Nurm.

Urmas Laht explained to the President the arguments of the crisis committee of rural life that serve as the basis for the demonstration that will be held at Toompea on August 11. Kaul Nurm talked about the standpoints of the Central Association of Estonian Farmers in the development of rural economy.

The President of the Republic said that the key to the solution of agricultural problems is to provide agricultural producers with the possibility to plan their activities further ahead. It is important for Estonian farmers to know how to sell their products, including to foreign countries.

The President said that Estonia needs laws that would provide protection against dumping and guarantee that Estonian products are ecologically clean and safe.

During the meeting, President of the Republic stressed the necessity of a friendly and constructive dialogue, especially in issues concerning rural economy. President Meri expressed his hope that Riigikogu would focus on a serious discussion of the issues of rural life and would not let the future of rural economy be the playground of party politics.
