20.07.1999

President of the Republic sent a letter of condolences to Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend, the Lieutenant-Governor of the State of Maryland.

President Lennart Meri expressed his condolences in connection with the plane accident of John F. Kennedy Junior, his wife Carolyn Bassette-Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bassette on July 16 on the coast of Massachusetts.

'The work of your illustrious family at the top of the United States of America and the entire democratic world won the hearts of the Estonian people many years ago, when Estonia was struggling under foreign occupation to restore her freedom and democracy. Since then, we have rejoiced with you over your victories and been much afflicted by the hardships that have befallen you,' the President said in his letter.

The President of the Republic met the Lieutenant-Governor of the State of Maryland on April 26 this year in Maryland.

On May 21, 1999, President Lennart Meri received the delegation of the State of Maryland of the United States of America.
