President Lennart Meri met with the Metropolitan of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church Stephanos in Kardiorg today.

During the meeting the President and the Metropolitan talked about the history of the mission to Estonia and about how Greek Orthodox missionaries had arrived in Estonia already during the early centuries of the first millennium.

Stephanos emphasised that he has come to Estonia wishing that Estonian people would become his people and Estonia his homeland. Stephanos said that his goal was to rebuild the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church.

The President assured the Metropolitan that he can rely on the personal support of the President as well as the support of the Estonian state.
