President of the Republic Visits Tartu

President Lennart Meri will have a meeting with Professor Sulev Vahtre in Tartu in order to discuss the continuation of the publication of “The History of Estonia”, which was interrupted in 1940. It is the President’s wish that the fourth volume of the “History of Estonia”, whose publication was interrupted by the Soviet occupation, and if possible also the fifth volume could be published in the Year of the Estonian Book. The President has been requested to be the patron of the Year of the Estonian Book. President Meri has the consent of Professor Sulev Vahtre and his students to write the book. “The History of Estonia” would be published in six volumes. The last volume would include also some corrections to the volumes published before World War II, the bibliography of the literature on history published in the meanwhile, historical maps, the index and the list of contents. Depending on the number of subscribers and financial resources, the pre-war and new volumes would be published with similar design and font usage.

In Tartu, President Meri will also meet Professor Emeritus Juhan Peegel, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.

At noon on Monday, May 31, President of the Republic will pay a visit to Vara Elementary School and hand over to the school the prize of the most beautiful schoolhouse of the Home Decoration Year, a carpet designed by the artist Anu Raud.

The most beautiful schoolhouse in Estonia was chosen by the Estonian Teachers’ Union on the basis of student essays, where the students described their ideas for the decoration of their schoolhouse.

The Vara Elementary School will receive a prize of 30,000 Estonian kroons from the Estonian Teachers’ Union. The pupils of the Väike-Õismäe Secondary School in Tallinn, the Karksi-Nuia Secondary School in the Viljandi County, the Türi Secondary School in the Järva County, the Hummuli Elementary School in the Valga County, and Ülenurme Secondary School in the Tartu County will receive letters of gratitude from the Teachers’ Union.
