President Lennart Meri received Mrs. Wu Yi, the Deputy Prime Minister of the People`s Republic of China, in Kadriorg today.

On the meeting, the Estonian Head of State and the Deputy Prime Minister of China discussed the bilateral relations and development of the economic co-operation between the two countries. As the Chinese Deputy Prime Minister said, there is a lot of space for development in this area. Estonia`s wish to accede to the European Union and NATO was another subject discussed on the meeting. As Mrs. Wu said, China understands Estonia`s wish to accede to the European Union. This is a normal aspiration for Estonia as a European country, Mrs. Wu said. As for accession to NATO, Mrs. Wu mentioned that Estonia has the right to choose her own path. Although this is an internal affair of Estonia, China understands and respects this wish, Mrs. Wu said.
