President of the Republic Received the Ambassador of Peru
11.03.1999

The The Ambassador of Peru Martha Chavarri Dupuy on the ceremony of presenting her credentials to the President of the RepublicPresident Lennart Meri received Mrs. Martha Chavarri Dupuy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Peru to the Republic of Estonia, who came to present her credentials, in Kadriorg today.

The Ambassador of Peru brought the best greetings of Alberto Fujimori, the President of Peru, and the people of Peru to President Meri and the people of Estonia. As the Ambassador said, it does not matter that Estonia and Peru are so far from each other and the two peoples speak different languages, relations can still be developed and this has been done already.

As the Ambassador said, the international organisations and also private financial institutions have recognised Peru's efforts for upgrading the economic situation and restraining the bureaucracy in recent years. It is the Ambassador's wish that the relations between democratic countries supporting free market economy, such as Estonia and Peru, which so far have mostly developed within the work of international organisations, could be further activated, and promised to do her best to attain this goal.

President Meri said that globalisation has brought Estonia and Peru closer together. Estonia has closely followed the developments in this Latin American country, both the changes in economic life and struggle against crime, the President said. As the President said he hopes that in the future Estonia would be able to open a diplomatic mission in Peru.

After the ceremony of the presentation of the credentials, the President and the Ambassador discussed the anti-terrorism struggle in Peru.
