Estonian President Lennart Meri 70 on March 29, 1999

On Saturday, March 27, a conference “Estonia in the World on the Threshold of the 21st Century” will be held in the Tartu University Assembly Hall. Presentations will be given by the political observer Paul Goble, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Professor Wolfgang Drechsler and the Rector of the University, Academician Jaak Aaviksoo. The conference will be followed by a reception in the Tartu University History Museum on Toome Hill.

On Sunday, March 28, the awarding ceremony of the Badge of Diligence of the Defence League will take place on the Central Assembly of the Defence League at the Sakala Centre.

On Monday, March 29, the Kadriorg Palace and the Book of Birthday Regards in the Ambassadors’ Hall of the palace will be open from 8.15 to 12.00 and from 13.00 to 21.00.

8.00 Birthday singing.
8.15 Flag-hoisting ceremony.
9.00 Breakfast of the Meri family, their departure to the Metsakalmistu graveyard to visit the graves of the parents.
12.00 - 12.45 The Diplomatic Corps in Kadriorg.
13.00 - 14.30 Lunch hosted by Prime Minister Mart Laar in honour of the President of the Republic on Toompea with the constitutional institutions.
15.00 - 15.45 Presentation of “A Life for Estonia”, a book by Andreas Oplatka, a long-time political observer of the “Neue Züricher Zeitung”, in the Conference Hall of the National Library, in the presence of President Meri. The President’s decorations are on display in the Main Exhibition Hall of the National Library.
16.00 - 17.00 The President invites townspeople to a cup of coffee from the field kitchen on the Town Hall Square.
19.00 - 21.00 Birthday guests in the Blackheads House.

The President has requested, instead of personal gifts, to consider donations to the President’s Cultural Foundation for the completion for the year 2000, the year of jubilee of the Estonian Book, of the composition of “The History of Estonia” and “The History of the Estonian Nation”, which was interrupted by World War II. (The President’s Cultural Foundation, Hansapank, code 767, account No. 1120081555, HABAEE2X). Instead of flowers, the President would be very glad to receive young tree plants, coniferous or deciduous, for the big tidying bee on the Uus-Meremaa Cape in Viimsi.
