President of the Republic Wrote a Letter to the Initiators of the Estonian Europe Movement
26.03.1999

Today, President Lennart Meri sent a greeting to the initiators of the Estonian Europe Movement, who had gathered on the opening conference of the Estonian International Europe Movement.

The President urged the participants of the movement to be tireless in reminding their international partners that Estonia has actually never left Europe, but on the Yalta conference, Europe was forced to forsake Estonia. As the President said, the participants of the Europe movement bear a high responsibility especially now that the conservatives have launched an attack against Europe, trying to lure Estonia into isolation as before World War II; at the present time it is their task to remind the people of Estonia that the Estonian language, the Estonian culture, the Estonian economy and first and foremost the Estonian independence, are safe and secure only in Europe.

The President wished the participants of the Movement strength, perseverance and serenity of mind in leading the people of Estonia to the world of Winston Churchill, Robert Schuman, Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer.
