President of the Republic Had a Meeting with the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs

President Lennart Meri received Anna Lindh, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden, this morning in Kadriorg.

On the meeting, the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs appreciated Estonia’s reunion process with Europe and said that Sweden would to everything to help to facilitate Estonia’s accession to the European Union.

As President Meri said, Estonia would be prepared for EU accession on January 1, 2003; the President hoped that by that time the EU would also be ready to receive her.

Also the co-operation of the Baltic Sea States was discussed on the meeting. President Meri drew attention to the need of building a deep-sea port to Saaremaa or Hiiumaa so that these islands could be included in more tourist routes. Minister Anna Lindh mentioned that besides the co-operation within the EU, also the successful co-operation between the Baltic Sea States has won the attention and recognition of other regions of the world.
