The first congratulations addressed to President Lennart Meri on the occasion of the Estonian Independence Day have arrived in the Office of the President of the Republic. The first congratulations to arrive in Kadriorg were from Her Majesty Elisabeth II, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Congratulations have also arrived from William J. Clinton, President of the United States, and Aleksander Kwasniewski, the President of Poland, Leonid Kutchma, the President of Ukraine, and Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, President of the Republic of Italy.

Also Ruth Dreifuss, President of the Swiss Confederation, Thomas Klestil, Federal President of Austria, and Ernesto Zedillo, President of the United States of Mexico, have sent their good wishes on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the World Food and Agriculture Organisation, has also sent his congratulations.
