President of the Republic Received the Ambassador of Ireland

The Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland Gearód Ó Broin, with his spouse, on the ceremony of presenting his credentials to the President of the RepublicPresident Lennart Meri received Gearód Ó Broin, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Ireland to the Republic of Estonia, who came to present his credentials, in Kadriorg this morning.

In his speech on the presenting of the credentials, Ambassador Gearód Ó Broin confirmed the good relations between Estonia and Ireland, especially in the field of culture, but also in economic affairs, and forwarded the personal greetings of Mary McAleese, the President of the Republic of Ireland. As the Ambassador said, Ireland is closely following Estonia's accession process to EU, which has been very successful so far. The Ambassador promised to do his best for the further development of the relations between the two States.

As President Meri said, Estonia and Ireland are very close. There have been many contacts in the cultures of the two nations, but today the Estonian businessmen could learn more from the Irish experience. Especially the Estonians who doubt the advantages of Estonia's accession to the EU could learn a lot from Ireland who does belong to the EU, the President said, and asked Ambassador Gearód Ó Broin to bring Ireland's experience in the European Union closer to Estonians.
