Christmas Cards Sent to the President of the Republic Displayed in the Tartu County Museum in Elva.Kadriorg, February 25, 1999
25.02.1999

The Christmas cards sent to President Lennart Meri for the Christmas and New Year of 1998/1999 are on display in the Tartu County Museum in Elva from February 25 to March 14, 1999.

For Christmas, the President sent more than 1400 Christmas cards to the Heads of State, prominent social and cultural figures, and good friends all over the world. On the cards there is a photograph by Ann Tenno depicting the snowy Presidential Palace in Kadriorg.

By the beginning of February, nearly a thousand Christmas cards from Estonia and all over the world have reached Kadriorg. Most of the cards were displayed on the exhibition in the National Library in January, and as the interest of the public was keen, the cards, including those that arrived later, are now displayed in the Tartu University Library.

The Christmas greetings from Kofi Annan, the Secretary General of the United Nations, and Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa, were the first to reach Kadriorg. Nearly half of the Christmas cards came from Estonia, from big and small families, from politicians, businessmen and officials, but also from the presidents and royalties all over the world.
