President Lennart Meri received Dan Tichon, Speaker of the Israeli Knesset (Parliament), in Kadriorg today. On the meeting, the peace process of the Middle East was discussed, and Tichon was optimistic about the future of the process and yet admitted that the peace process is very complicated and time-consuming.

The Israeli parliament elections that are to take place on May 17, 1999, and whose results it would be hard to predict at this stage, were also discussed on the meeting.

The integration process and the need for the exchange of experiences of the integration of minorities were also considered on the meeting.

The European security issues and the ways for strengthening the security of the Ukraine were also discussed. The Speaker of the Israeli Parliament and the President of Estonia also discussed the relations between the European Union and Turkey and the developments in Kazakhstan.
