President Lennart Meri today wrote a letter to Valdas Adamkus, President of the Republic of Lithuania, on the occasion of the Lithuanian National Day of Mourning. President Meri wrote that Estonia still vividly recalls the horror felt at the sheer brutality of the murderous attack of the Soviet forces.

The President also said in his letter that in the years that have passed, some that carried out this massacre have been tried in Lithuanian courts. “Elsewhere in the world we can see that not only the perpetrators, but also the leaders personally responsible for ordering such massacres are being brought to justice,” President Meri also wrote. The Estonian President expressed his hope that “one day those responsible for giving the orders on that dark day will have to bear the contempt of the international community”.
