President Lennart Meri received Niels Helveg Petersen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, who is on a working visit in Estonia, in Kadriorg today.

The meeting focused on the issues of NATO enlargement and the forthcoming Washington Summit. Minister Petersen expressed his hope that the Washington summit would result in a stronger wording concerning the status of the candidate countries than the Madrid Summit of 1998.

The President of the Republic of Estonia and the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs also discussed the development of the European defence identity, and the Danish Minister of Foreign affairs agreed to the statement of President Meri that parallelly with strengthening defence identity, the continued presence of the United States in Europe must also be guaranteed.
