27.05.2001

President Lennart Meri met senators of the United States of AmericaPresident Lennart Meri received US Senators Gordon Smith of Oregon, Paul S. Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Richard Durbin of Illinois and George V. Voinovich of Ohio Sunday morning in Kadriorg.

President Meri stressed that Estonia has very good co-operation with its Baltic neighbours, especially in defence policies. He emphasised that Estonia wishes to join NATO because we believe in and share the common values of the NATO allies, as has been proved by the Estonian troops' active participation in the peace mission in the Balkans.

The participants also discussed the United States' relations with the European Union and the developments in Russia.
