President of the Republic Had a Conversation with the Mayor of Tallinn

President Lennart Meri received Ivi Eenmaa, the Mayor of Tallinn, and Hain Karu, Head of the City Planning Department of the Municipality, and architects Tiit Trummal and Andres Alver, in Kadriorg today. The future of the Tallinn Square of Liberty and its surroundings, also Tallinn's view to the sea and the upgrading of Kadriorg Park were discussed on the meeting.

Answering the architects' questions what needs of the State should be considered when planning the Square of Liberty and the centre of Tallinn, the President said that in Estonia there should be one military parade a year, taking place on the Victory Day in a different Estonian city every year. The President said that as children are free from school in summertime, they would have more opportunity to have a look at and get familiar with the Estonian defence forces and military equipment

The President hopes that Toompea would become more and more picturesque as the building activities in Tallinn develop. Tallinn's openness to the sea and access to the sea from different districts of the city were also discussed. As the President said, all districts of Tallinn must retain their local colour, and the traditional proportions of Tallinn and the atmosphere of the city must also be preserved.

Speaking go Kadriorg, the Mayor promised to take the first decisions necessary to tidy up the area facing the Presidential Palace already at the beginning of the New Year. She also hoped to obtain the funding necessary for these works.
