President of the Republic Received the Ambassador of India
01.10.1998

President Lennart Meri received Mrs. Kamlesh Kumar, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of India, who came to pay her farewell visit, in Kadriorg today.

The Ambassador of India and the President discussed the economic developments in the world. The Ambassador of India admitted that India did not remain completely unaffected by the financial crisis of the South-East Asia, but as India has not speeded up the globalization of economy in recent years, the symptoms of crisis are insignificant. The Ambassador hoped that the President's planned state visit to India next year would, among other things, enable to foster economic relations between Estonia and India, as sufficient potential for this certainly exists.

On the meeting, the Ambassador also elucidated India's positions on the banning of nuclear weapons and spoke of the latest developments in this field. The President confirmed that Estonia is continuously interested in closer co-operation with India.
