President of the Republic of Estonia Received the Ambassador of Kazakhstan

President Lennart Meri received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan, His Excellency Ikram Adyrbekov, who paid a visit to the President to present his credentials, in Kadriorg today. Ambassador Adyrbekov was pleased to observe the development of closer relations between Estonia and Kazakhstan and expressed his conviction that the economic relations, especially in the field of transit and commerce, will grow further in future.

The situation in Russia and in the States of the Caspian Sea was discussed on the meeting as a separate subject. Russia's possible special interests in the region and agreements concerning the strategic natural resources of the Caspian basin were also considered.

The Ambassador was interested in the economic success of Estonia and the process of accession to the European Union and said that Kazakhstan's interest towards Estonia is bound to increase further after the accession.

President Meri was interested in the life of the Uigurs living in Kazakhstan and the relations between Kazakhstan and China; the President also inquired whether Kazakhstan is considering the possibility of establishing a diplomatic representation in Estonia. At the moment, Ambassador Ikram Adyrbekov resides in Vilnius.
