President Lennart Meri sent his congratulations to Jacques Chirac, the President of the Republic of France, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of France.

President Meri expressed his confidence that, under President Chirac's leadership, France would remain the leading member of the European family in politics and culture as well as in sports. ''I must confess, cher ami, that last night I was as happy and proud as you and France were and that Estonia was celebrating your victory as our own,'' the Estonian Head of State wrote.

The President reminisced his long-time acquaintance with and love for France and also his previous personal contacts with Mr. Chirac, and wished success and happiness to the people of France and the President of the Republic of France.
