President of the Republic met the Director General of UNESCO

President Lennart Meri received Federico Mayor, the Director General of UNESCO in Kadriorg today; Federico Mayor was invited by the President on a visit to Tallinn in order to celebrate the inclusion of the cultural heritage of the Estonian capital to the World Heritage List.

At the meeting with President Meri the Director General said that European countries should learn from the Baltic States' experience of living in a multinational society. As Federico Mayor said, the Baltic States are not just democratic countries but exemplary democratic countries.

President Meri and Director General Mayor did not sign the Memorandum of Co-operation between the Republic of Estonia and UNESCO today, as the text of the Memorandum reached the President's Office at 11.45 today. The President postponed the signing of the Memorandum so that the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs could approve the text of the Memorandum to be signed.
