President of the Republic had a meeting with Members of Riigikogu
10.06.1998

President of the Republic received Members of Riigikogu in Kadriorg today and heard their opinions concerning the proposed candidates to the positions concerning the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Bank of Estonia and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia.
As the candidacy of Uno Lõhmus to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia was supported by all political powers represented in Riigikogu, and several factions supported the candidacy of Mart Sõrg to the position of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Bank of Estonia, the President decided to propose the candidates to Riigikogu for appointment to the above high positions.
The appointment of Professor Mart Sõrg to the position of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Bank of Estonia was supported by the representatives of the People's Party Faction, the Moderates Faction, the Reform Party Faction, and the Pro Patria Union Faction. Andres Tarand, representative of the Moderates, said on the meeting with the President that in the current situation it is imperative to act promptly and fill these high positions. Jüri Adams, representative of the Pro Patria Union, emphasized that it would be precarious to the Estonian people and the Estonian State if this post was to stay vacant in the present circumstances.
Siiri Oviir said that most of the Central Party supports the President's candidate.
According to Mati Meos the Coalition Party does not support the candidacy of Mart Sõrg. Meos advised to consider Olev Raju or Tiit Vähi to the position of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Bank of Estonia and informed that the Coalition faction no longer supports the candidacy of Jaak Leimann to this high position. The representatives of the Estonian Rural Party, the Rural Union, Pensioners and Families Union and the Estonian United Peoples Party informed the head of state that they do not support the candidacy of Mart Sõrg. Nikolai Maspanov from the Russian Party in Estonia informed the President that their representatives had not yet met Professor Sõrg.
The President advised members of Riigikogu to draw serious conclusions from the current distrust and recommended that all the politicians who had not yet reached a decision should meet with Professor Sõrg.
