Today President Lennart Meri wrote a letter to Toomas Savi, Speaker of the Riigikogu, where he requested Riigikogu to recall Rait Maruste from the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia in connection with his election to the post of Justice of the European Court of Human Rights as of August 20, 1998.

In accordance with clause 11 of Section 78 of the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia the President proposed to Riigikogu to appoint Uno Lõhmus to the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Estonia.
